Explosion/Sonic Boom? 10.50pm Weds 27/12/2023

Heard massive "explosion" sound last night c. 1050pm @ Kidderminster. House vibrated, cutlery rattled. Friend driving on A456 saw huge flash in sky to north but as driving with music heard nowt. Others reported hearing same in Stourbridge area, plus I got a text at 11pm from from someone in Manchester who felt house shake, thinking it was an earthquake. Did anyone hear, see, experience this between Birmingham and Manchester? Thinking it might have been supersonic aircraft, but flash suggests meteor breaking up as entered atmosphere?

There was something similar in Liverpool last night, definitely thunder and a very bright flash of lightning.

Edit: Have just asked a friend who lives in Chester, he said he saw/heard the same too.

Interesting.....so might be freak thunderstorm (extra loud)? I think wind was from NW last night so might have carried "boom" to us. I only heard one boom, 3 to 4 seconds duration.

I would say given it was over quite a large area at the same time, a large thunderstorm was the source. We had a second, much quieter clap of thunder very shortly after the first, but nothing after that.

It certainly "raised the roof" for a few unfortunate folk in that particular area. Maybe an hour later than what reportedly happened in the Midlands.

Lightning bangs as Shropshire braced for floods
A loud bang was heard across Shropshire as thunder and lightning swept the county.
A video posted on social media captured the sound in Bridgnorth as Storm Gerrit brought high winds.
Flood barriers are up and warnings have been put in place for Maesbrook and Melverley following rainfall.
Elizabeth Nicholls and daughter Lottie, 17, from Bridgnorth, heard the bang - thought to be a lightning strike - while filming the rain from a window.
"I've never heard anything like it," said Ms Nicholls, a member of the band Rumour.

I think it must have been very widespread. Over here in Nottinghamshire between 11pm and midnight there was a constant roar from the high winds and with very heavy rain. There were also quite a number of loud rumbles of thunder.

I was at home in Halesowen at the time and didn't hear anything above the wind and rain.

But unusual to get such a vibration from it rattling the house, no evidence of storm in Kiddy so must've carried a long way in the high winds.

Didn't notice any thunder but over in Derbyshire it certainly got very wild just gone 1030 last night.

I think that happened this morning......but it might mean another meteor a few days ago is possible?

I have been looking at various videos of meteors from around the world, many have that "boom" on the soundtrack which makes me think the Wednesday night boom was also a meteor, even though it coincided with a thunderstorm 50 miles north of here......
