Explore Cardiff and Valleys ticket

Is the Explore Cardiff and Valleys day ticket valid from Newport or Severn Tunnel Junction? Its not clear. And would it count as a zonal ticket for split tickerting purposes?

On the Explore Cardiff & Valleys page of the Railrover website, there are 2 route restrictions for that ticket, those being 'not valid to Newport' and 'not valid on GWR trains'. The only way into Wales from Severn Tunnel Junction is via Newport, so it isn't valid there either.
Essentially, the ticket covers only the core valley lines and Maesteg-Ebbw Vale.

No, it is not valid from either of those stations. It is valid on the Ebbw Vale Town branch, but only on trains that come from Cardiff and avoid Newport.

As with most rangers and rovers, you can undertake non-stop splits, although I'm not sure where you would want to do so at the moment. Of course, if Cardiff Parkway gets built, I could see the case for it if using XC (noting that it's not valid on GWR services).

Not in the 40 years since I first used it (or more pedantically its predecessor). Unless it’s had a brief period of validity which was then removed and I missed it. There have been debates in the past about what happens when Ebbw Vake trains are diverted via Newport….

If you're willing to brave it, it's worth trying tap and go it'll work out cheaper with the daily cap.

It's one restriction which got mentioned to me when I purchased one a couple of months ago from the ticket office at Bridgend.

As for Newport when Ebbw Vale trains go that way (especially on Sundays) it's a very grey area, I suspect most guards will say it's valid only if you remain on board at Newport
