I need urgent advice regarding a letter I have received from Revenue Recovery Team at GWR.
February 2024, I was stopped by a ticket inspector and presented an expired Railcard. Inspector was rude and towering over me demanding my details. I didn’t have my ID at the time, but gave my details. The fair discrepancy was about £2-3. I offered to pay at the time, however, Inspector was not having any of it. I had to tell him to move away from me several times as he made me very uncomfortable. I gave my details, showed my address in an app as he requested and was given a card. Cut to today 17.7.2025, I have received an email from GWR regarding this matter, who have said they have reviewed my tickets dated back to 2018 and charging me a fine of £2755 for tickets I have bought without a railcard. I have evidence that I have had a valid railcard in the past (admittedly there may have been times I didn’t but didn’t realise and as it stays in the app as an option I would go ahead and just buy a ticket). I have been given 3 weeks to pay in full or will be charged further and taken to court. I’m wondering if anyone has been in this position or can offer any advice on how to go about this as I do not have that much money to my name. Please help
