Hi All - Received an intent to prosecute letter today. I was traveling to London Blackfriars from St Albans City. I unfortunately forgot to renew my railcard but I did not know at the time that it had expired.
The inspector took my details and printed me a paper with instructions to upload the card online. I uploaded the new railcard, and emailed the team later regarding updates.
I am unsure what to include and what to exclude; your help and advice is greatly appreciated.
Please see below my drafted response (I borrowed heavily from the other posts but everything stated is correct):
Dear Prosecutions Department,
Reference number: xyz
I am writing in response to the letter I received on the 1st of March 2026 regarding the incident on the 4th of November 2025. Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to respond.
I sincerely apologise for being unaware that my railcard had expired at the time of travel.
When I boarded the train I thought I had a valid railcard, however, I could not load it upon request. Once I had a mobile connection, I realised that it had expired. I promptly purchased a new railcard starting that day and uploaded said railcard via the form provided.
Then, followed up with the GTR Prosecutions Team via email. In my understanding, my case was being considered and I was awaiting confirmation regarding next steps.
I did not appreciate the severity of this at the time, but this incident has served as a valuable lesson and I deeply regret my mistake.
That being said, I have been extremely conscious ever since to have a fully charged phone and the valid railcard downloaded when I travel. I can assure you that this will not happen again.
I would be grateful if you would be willing to consider resolving this matter without court proceedings. I am more than willing to promptly pay the outstanding fare and administrative costs incurred.
Thank you for your consideration.
