Expired rail card

Hi guys,

I have been caught with expired railcard and O didn't realise it was expired around 6 months ago...at that time I had only photo id railcard only so inspector filed enquiry agains me and I received a letter today regarding warning against fine and chance to reply. So at this point this should have known my previous travel history with expired card which couod be 2 or 3 journeys.I still not able to find card showing expiry card. SO please advice what to reply or should I mention only about the travel I have been caught or entire history? Please help

As a general principle, do not incriminate yourself and do not provide information outside the questions you are being asked explicitly. The train company can examine your travel history but you should not mention it if not asked about it.

But we need to see more from you if you want good advice tailored to your circumstance.

Thanks for the quick response. I was travellng from liverpool to leeds.
I had 16 - 25 physical railcard but lost the card showing expired date.So able to show the one with photo id railcard only, with no expiry date on it.
I had no clue about the expiry date since I never checked the railcard before and its now lost also. So the inspector filed enquiry against for not having railcard. Now I assume its been expired around six months ago since that day of incident and received letter for my explanation mentioning about that particular day. They may able to know previous travel history during expiration period but not mentioned in letter. What should I reply at this condition. I am attaching the letter received for advice. Please help me resolve issue.

@baby678. Welcome to the forum. If you didn't have a valid, in date, railcard, when you got stopped, reckon you could end up being asked by TPE to pay them the cost of an Anytime Day Single from Liverpool to Leeds (= £46.20) plus a three figure admin fee added on top, with no allowance made for whatever was originally paid. Problem might be if TPE further investigate your online ticket purchasing history and come to the conclusion (rightly or wrongly) that you also didn't have a valid, in date, railcard on other occasions when you travelled using discounted tickets, particularly so if you can't satisfactorily evidence that you did previously have a valid railcard for certain / all of these trips.

Thnks for the response.At this condition, what should I reply? Should I respond with that particular travel only while acknowledging my mistake.

Yes, it says you can respond by email.

The general consensus here is to keep your comments to the day you were stopped, in the absence of the letter referring to potential other travel.

So apologise for the omission, promise to be more careful in future, say by setting a reminder on your phone, and ask very nicely for a settlement offer.

You haven’t told us the date you were stopped though, which could be relevant.
