I have made a big mistake in using a rail card that expired 3 years ago. It’s on me 100% for not checking. It expired in September 2022 and I’ve made 16 journeys since then all through the Trainline app. It wasn’t something I ever really considered I moved abroad not long after it expired and been back about a year. Feel free to call me an absolute idiot but I’m just wandering what the next steps will be, I’m fully willing to work with them regarding any fine.

Has the been noticed during a ticket inspection or is it just you have now noticed.

If it has not been picked up on by a member of rail staff then you have absolutely nothing to worry about.

Yeah ticket inspection at new street
When did this happen and have the railway company written to you about it yet? If not you need to wait to hear from them.

By way of preparation you should list out those 16 trips and work out what the full fare would be (anytime fare) as that will be part of the sum they will be seeking plus an admin fee of c£150.

This happened yesterday 18th April at 13.58 and so no I haven’t heard anything from them as of yet.

I’ve have made the list as you suggested and worked out the fee with and without the admin fee. It doesn’t make for nice viewing

Wait now until they contact you but post any questions you have here and people will advise.

I suppose if anyone would have an idea of an outcome. It’s West Midlands rail that stopped me. The thing that makes me paranoid is the length of time it had expired and while it was t used entirely for well over a year I don’t feel that I’ll have any leg to stand on. Also to mention one of the bookings made was a national express and I dunno if that would have been affected by a rail card.

They will likely seek the fares for any rail tickets purchased at a railcard discount for the period when no valid railcard was held.

They won’t be interested in coach tickets bought.

It maybe a few weeks before you hear from them eg four weeks or more.

When they contact you get advice here before you reply.

Look at other threads involving West Midlands railway to get the idea.

They may contact you by letter or email so watch post and also spam.

It would be very unlikely they would prosecute you if you engage with them when they contact you, so the key thing is getting their letter or email.

Train operating Companies have two objectives: firstly getting the fares due and secondly discouraging / dissuading you from making the same mistake or same deliberate fare evading. They would rather achieve this objective “out of court” rather than resorting to legal proceedings as it is costly, time consuming and contrary to the image they wish to portray. Legal proceedings are only resorted to for those who do not engage, persistent offenders and those who engage in fraud in the true sense of the word.
