Exit and re-entry

If you exit then re-enter a station using a valid season ticket is there a time within which the gates will reject the ticket for re-entry?

I've an idea the ticket might get rejected for re-entry within 10 minutes of exit, but don't know if I'm right.

You are correct in my experiences with various lengths of seasons over a number of years. I wouldn't like to say what the time period is, or whether it's standard across the network.

The times can vary. Potters Bar seems to be nearer 30 minutes, for example.

20 minutes at Reading which I think is typical.

Interestingly this applies for single/return tickets too: if you're let out they will open the barriers again after the time period.

The time for what is called passback can be set by the TOC for each individual gateline. The standard is 15 minutes, but it will vary according to local requirements.

I don't know why it's so high at Potters Bar. It's not as if a Travelcard can be used again (given it's one stop outside Zone 6 so will be rejected as the out boundary part has been used) but I suppose for stations within the zones, you'd want to set it for as long as possible given people could leave and pass/sell their ticket to someone else for re-use over and over until 0429!

It's very annoying at Blackfriars if you are changing from southbound Thameslink to South Eastern and your connection is a bit tight!

It's very annoying at Blackfriars if you are changing from southbound Thameslink to South Eastern and your connection is a bit tight!

Use the south end of the station to change platforms and you won't need to pass through any barriers.

Waterloo is quite good at allowing exit and re-entry within a couple minutes. Useful when transferring from platforms on the Wimbledon suburban platforms to the Windsor platforms.

Depends how far they're going - quite a few trains skip CLJ (apologies, couldn't filter out the empty stock workings)

Quite a few of the long distance services don't stop at Clapham at all, some only stop during the peaks (for a couple peak services the first stop from Waterloo is Winchester)
