Exeter to Hampton Court

I'm looking for some advice on the following journey:
Exeter - Hampton Court on 8th July. Departing any time from 09.00 arriving any time before 19.00.
Hampton Court - Exeter 9th July. Departing after 16.30.

It's for 2 people in their 60s going to Hampton Court Flower Show.
They will be staying near Hampton Court on the night of 8th July. They have Oyster Cards and Senior Railcards.

An important consideration is on the return the expect to have shopping from the Flower Show so they want to have a minimum number of changes on the return.

Obviously they would prefer a cheaper journey but on balance less changes is more important. They are now bothered about speed of journey.

So I was wondering what would be the best route (Waterloo maybe?) and are there any good places to split tickets? Thanks in advance.

The minimum hassle route would be Exeter - Woking / Woking - Surbiton / Surbiton - Hampton Court.

Ticket price: £45.10 per person. OFF-PEAK R Return Route: Valid only via Honiton, not valid via London.

Don't forget megatrain tickets, though I don't think you can use it on the way back with your time constraints. You would also have to ride all the way into Waterloo. I don't think there is much in the way of splitting with advances via SWT.

Advance tickets are available with SWT from Exeter St Davids to Hampton Court with changes at Woking & Surbiton. Is there any flexibility for the return journey? leaving at 1554?

When the flower show is on there are times in the late afternoon when most people are leaving when you have to queue to get back into the station & can't necessarily get onto the next train as it is already full. so if using advance tickets you would need to be back at the station in good time. The train is usually well laden with plants!

On the return, if passengers are willing to travel via Clapham Junction there is a cross platform interchange from the up slow (platform 10) to the down fast (platform 9). All up trains from Hampton Court should be on the up slow lines and the Exeter trains invariably will be on the down fast.

The 2020 Waterloo - Exeter is a direct train which is being diverted from Basingstoke via Southampton Ctl to Salisbury. It will still get in to Exeter ar 0023, but you don't need to change onto a bus.
