Hi all,

I have just been watching some videos of this level crossing on YouTube, and saw that there always appears to be an attendant in the centre of the crossing. I had a quick search online, and have found that it is always monitored by a signaller on the ground due to its width and times for which it is closed. I wondered what the exact procedure is at this crossing, and what the role of the attendant is?

Looks like an interesting set up!

Thanks,

Brick60000

The signaller is in control of the crossing, all the attendant does is marshal pedestrian traffic, overruling the wigwags when safe. Exeter Council pay NR for the attendant.

I've always wondered about the attendant, especially when he marshalls pedestrians across contrary to the crossing lights,

An illuminated indicator shows what movements are approaching, in which direction, on which line(s). E.g. 4D, 5U.
This is my first (test) posting on Rail Forums.

Thanks, that makes sense so the attendant knows which parts are safe to cross etc,

Well, well! Should they be paying I wonder?! Probably goes back into history but there would be a lot of unhappy people and probaly more accidents if they didn't! But quite why Exeter Council should pay I don't understand...
I fear the local council is likely to have been there before the railway...

I walk across it every day, he lets you across if the barriers go down a long time before the train is coming, or between trains. The pedestrian gates are chained up once he leaves for the night.

I believe the attendants are signallers at Exeter PSB who get rostered to act in the role.

Red Cow has its own link. They are grade 1s. It can be (and is) occasionally covered by Exeter Panel staff. The Council pay a part of the costs as it is a historic right of way. I guess if councils can subsidise train services, they can subsidise other things.

Yes they do. I merely mentioned Exeter Panel because Temple Meads made the comment about Exeter Panel. In theory, if they were desperate, I could go and cover it!

Thanks for the information everyone! It seems to be a rather interesting set up! Are there any other crossings that operate in a similar way?
