I can’t ever see Cardiff services running to Central except possibly on start/end of day if then. I thought the eventual plan was for hourly Cardiff-Taunton and Exeter/Plymouth-Penzance services to get joined up so as to also do the honours at Wellington and Cullompton stations when they reopen.

Such a big improvement! The ticket machines themselves look interesting, a new variant I haven't seen before - they look set up for contactless card use.
Certainly a few teething issues as they're a new brand of gate (Vix), it does take time to get your head around it!
You may be on to something. Exeter is well beyond London's CPAY area (for which Cubic gates & validators are non-negotiable), and by coincidence Merseyrail joined TfW in running their own contactless PAYG scheme with that same model of gate today.
One reason Exeter Central have ended up with Vix gates, as opposed to Cubic, is that Cubic failed to bid for the contract! There's definitely no plans for Cpay or for replacement of other gates with these.
It's a long way off and may not even get past the planning stage, as with anything now, it's down to the DfT ultimately
The ticket office is now open plan, it's on the right hand side as you walk into the ticket hall from the queen street entrance.

It would be better if the other side of the footbridge could be opened up, anyone going to platform 3 could be directed via that side.
