The machine may detect if the ticket has gone through machines several times before (i.e. multiple use of return tickets). Of course, the gate attendant will then just assume the machine isn't working properly and wave you through.

I put my outboundary travelcard into a London Underground ticket barrier, only for a zones 1-2 travelcard to come out! While I was standing there in confusion, the next person behind put their ticket in and was given my travelcard (worth far more) in return, almost walking off with it!
I once put my ticket in the barrier at Guildford, and nothing at all happened. I forgot to make a note of which barrier it was, so it was interesting explaining to the staff why I had no ticket...

Well as far as I'm concerned, I gain the convenience of not pestering the staff on the barrier. Even better when it's not busy!

When I said machine, I was referring to a ticket checker that rail staff may have, not a barrier.

Victoria station barriers reject all advance tickets - when Southern had the 90% off sale people simultaneously put an advance ticket in every barrier - causing the attendant to just open all the gates and let everyone through (after retrieving everyone's ticket, it was in a little column and they wound something up and it came back up IIRC)
The only other time I lost a ticket was in the Bristol Temple Meads barriers - I accidentally put my PlusBus in there
(those ticket gates are weird, as the fonts of the writing on it are in TfL font - as if they were old TfL barriers sent to be used in Bristol) as I had finished with it anyway I just left it in there and inserted my actual ticket :P

Always happened to me at London Bridge with tickets valid to St Pancras via Thameslink. I now never put my ticket in the barriers there.
Retrieval was very easy though once you had attracted the attendants attention.

I once arrived at a station very early. I bought my return ticket but decided to leave the station to visit the shop across the road and put the return portion in the barrier to leave the station... It was only upon returning from the shop I realised I'd lost my ticket. Typically, an 8-car train from London had arrived in the mean time, burying my ticket under endless others :roll:
Thankfully the member of staff on the gate was very understanding and found it within a few minutes.

Not necessarily; if the attendant watches you put your ticket through the gate the gate shows an error code telling them what's wrong. There is a code for "Already used for one single/return journey", 51 IIRC.

We had this problem on Saturday at Kings Cross and Leeds. The ticket went through fine at both stations when starting the journey, however at the end of each journey the machines didn't want to take the tickets at all.
Have had similar things happen to me at both LU and National Rail barriers - getting someone else's weekly Travelcard instead of my own annual is FAR from funny.....
