Just booked tickets on the website for a day trip to Doncaster. Like a muppet I’ve somehow chosen the wrong date for the return journey. Can this be exchanged or do I have to take the hit and pay for a new one on the correct date?

Most retailers will allow you to cancel a ticket within an hour or two without penalty, to cover this sort of situation.

"The website". Do you mean the forum site?

Yes, you can do this via your retailer. If the ticket cost less than their change fee it might not be worthwhile, though.
I’ve emailed the Trainsplit people but they don’t open again until 09:30 tomorrow. No idea what the change fee is until I hear back from them. Then there’s the possibility that prices may have risen by then and adding any increase to change fee may make it not worth it.
As for the mistake, I put it down to old age. :D

On the forum site "help" page, "Refunds and amendments can all be done online. Please click here" links to https://refunds.trainsplit.com/ , which contains a form to fill in and the information (my bold):
Automatic online refunds for tickets purchased from TrainSplit. You can use this service to:
  • Refund unused flexible tickets
  • Refund unused advance tickets, for which a replacement ticket (for the same journey as the originals) has already been purchased through us.
Advance ticket information
In contrast to flexible tickets (such as off-peak or anytime tickets), Advance tickets are sold for a fixed-time itinerary. They are typically cheaper, and have more limited refund options.

To claim a refund on Advance tickets you must re-book before the original travel date/time for the same journey (the origin, destination and passengers must remain the same). The departure date/time and ticket type (advance or flexible) can be different, but you must claim for the refund before the original ticket's departure time. An administrative fee of up to £5 will be charged for any amendment or cancellation request (other than when affected by disruption or within 1 hour of booking) & the Change of Journey/cancellation fee is charged per booking reference. Booking fees are non-refundable. For more information, please refer to the pre-agreed Terms and Conditions.
Thus, it appears to me that you should buy a new ticket for the correct time and submit the refund form within one hour since the original purchase to get the incorrect booking refunded fee-free (or be charged £5 if more than an hour has elapsed). Perhaps someone with more insight can confirm?

If it's Trainsplit you shouldn't have any problem. They will go by the time your email was sent, if it's within an hour of the booking confirmation you'll almost certainly be able to get a refund.

Many thanks. Tried that but for some reason booking reference wasn’t recognised. I’ve now tried again and it’s all sorted. Doncaster here we come.
