On Saturday I will be purchasing a Wrexham General - Liverpool Lime Street SDR (£6.60) with a 16-25 railcard.

On the return journey I want to excess the return portion to a Liverpool Lime Street - Llangollen Bus ticket. How much is the excess going to cost me?

You would have a zero fare excess to Ruabon and then pay the bus fare to Llangollen. As far as I am aware there is no bus add-on fare for Llangollen, but I could be wrong. Ruabon Plusbus does not cover Llangollen.

Add £3.40 minus any railcards.

Link operator/route: Bryn Melyn/GHA/Arriva X5/5/555/94.

Journey Time: Approximately 15 minutes from Ruabon Railway Station

Destination name & NLC: Llangollen Bus K190

Tickets must be issued with the destination "Llangollen Bus" in order that customers can use the bus service.

Doesn't look valid on the X94 though so beware!

Under the latest version of the excess rules, it should be £2.25, as the fare for the rail portion of the journey is the same and the bus add-on is, unusually, Railcard discountable. The other alternative is that you'll be charged approximately half that price, either £1.10 or £1.15, which is what it'd be under the old rules.

Relevant destination for the add-on is K190 if changing at Ruabon.

Cheers,

Barry

I suspect the 94 is a type on that, the only bus I know around here that has 94 in the route number is the X94.

Apparently you can't excess a ticket to this destination.

I'll try somewhere else tomorrow.

You CAN'T excess to that ticket!

You need an excess to Ruabon, and then a separate Ruabon-Llangollen Bus ticket.

Price will work the same, but the bus elements have to be separate from the rail tickets.

Can I ask how you have come to this conclusion?

Can you explain how you have come to that conclusion?

No TOC prices Llangollen Bus as a through fare from any destination.

It is only available from Ruabon-Llangollen Bus, therefore any TIS trying to calculate an excess from Liverpool will fail as there is no Liverpool-Llangollen Bus fare to excess to.

That is slightly incorrect LM__, you can not buy a through fare FROM K190 however you can TO K190.

However, the fare needs to be set up as if they are selling a Normal Ticket (one of the destinations changed) in this case it would be:

From LLANGOLLEN BUS (K190)
To LIVERPOOL L ST (2246)

No fares exist for that journey so you can't excess a ticket to it (even if you are doing one direction only.)

Your cheapest (unless bus cash fare is cheaper) is to:

  • Obtain a Zero Fare Over distance excess on the return portion of your ticket to Ruabon which would be set up as below*
  • Then buy a Ruabon to K190 BDS (Bus Day Single) - £2.10.

* This should be set up in the ticket issuing system as a RUA to LIV ticket, then excessed from there.

So you are both saying that it is not possible to just do a straight excess from Liverpool Stations - Llangollen bus?

This leaves me a little confused.

Right, you should buy:

16-25 Railcard

Ruabon-Liverpool SDR @ £6.60
-Start short at Wrexham. On return, travel through to Ruabon.

Ruabon-Llangollen Bus BDS @ £1.15

TOTAL: £7.75

No excess fares needed and nice and simple.

You are dealing with an 'add-on' fare, so the rules aren't always straight forward. Generally speaking with bus add-ons (not PlusBus) you can add the fare to the destination of an ticket, but not the origin.

When an excess is issued, the machine operator has to input the ticket as if they are changing the whole ticket. So when you are asking to change a ticket so you can return to Llangollen Bus, they have to put in Llangollen Bus to Liverpool return. This will return no fare because they can't add the bus fare to the origin in this case, a separate ticket is needed for the bus portion.

Ruabon - Llangollen Bus BDS isn't £1.15.

Though I do seem to be in possession of a bit of orange card which has Liverpool Stations - Llangollen bus on it as well as the word excess.

It is £1.15

£1.70 single, then 34% railcard reduction is permitted which takes you to £1.15.
