Excessing single to reverse return

I understand that a single can be excesed to a return. Does this apply both ways around?

A-B single excessed to a return A-B Out, B-A Rtn
A-B single excessed to a return B-A Out, A-B Rtn

Yesterday I wanted to do the latter but wasn't sure if its an official procedure.

From memory the advance fare FAQ says this is allowed (to accommodate, for example, someone who has booked advances for a return journey and misses their outbound leg, who can then use the value of the return ticket less £10 fee towards a walk-up return). I can't see any reason why it should not be allowed with walk-up tickets, but as ever, finding a clerk who will allow it may be challenging.

I was with the OP at the time and, where we were at, I think that would have been the bigger issue (well, finding someone who knew what to do, at least)

There is nothing in the excess fare procedures that forbids this process, and I would imagine that the Advance Fare FAQs do help in this regard.

However I would imagine that the ticket should be completely unused when the excess fare is requested, as otherwise the outward portion would not be usable since the return portion would have already been used.

As an excess fare, there is no admin fee chargeable on walk-up tickets.

The 'Advance FAQs' state it is possible, but the example given is in advance of the return leg being used (missing a train on the outward leg).
