Excessing fares in advance

Hi all,

For the first time in years I need to excess a ticket. The one in question is the return portion of a Wellington to Hereford Route Shrewsbury Off-Peak Return. I need to excess it to Route Birmingham, ideally doing it in advance rather than hassling the guard on-board.

If all else fails, can I excess it at New Street?
