OR is a new single needed? NOT all understanding on excess rules. THeAT why I'm asking thanks

Yes - can't see why not, a simple overdistance should do the trick... ask a guard as their machine would still calculate as 1/2 difference whilst ticket office may do full distance.

I don't understand the question. You have a Chippenham to Bath return, and are at Bath and want to go to Ashchurch?

If so, then this is allowed. Checking the Routeing Guide a Bath to Ashchurch ticket is valid via Chippenham so you can overdistance this to Ashchurch.

Mojo - I think sonic wanted to know weather just because the barrier has swallowed his out portion whether he could still get the XS, the answer is yes. As both portions are not needed for a one portion XS  HTH TP

Don’t know if FGW will do this but on many occasions in the past SWT have told me that they can’t excess a return portion of a ticket unless accompanied by the out portion.

I recall (within recent months) an FGW HST guard taking great pains to attempt an excess for part of the return leg of a ticket for me. (The attempt failed but he clearly regretted that it hadn't been possible.) The outward portion was not presented.

I have had a change of route excess from FGW on presenting a return portion only (I did have the outbound portion in my pocket, but it wasn't asked for). In my experience, SWT booking offices are among the worst to go to for anything beyond "single/return from here to X".

That's ludicrous! The other way round I could understand, I suppose.

However there is an argument along the lines that once you reached your destination you cannot then excess the ticket. I have no evidence to suggest this is correct, but equally no proof that it isn't correct. However if you boarded at an unstaffed station and did not encounter a conductor on board, then I would counter such a claim with this being the first opportunity to do so.

Many staff will refuse to do excesses, or will calculate them incorrectly. It's sometimes debatable what the 'correct' excess is. My advice when getting excesses is to get them as far in advance as practicable and 'shop around' if at all possible. It's a lottery.

SWT will excess at the destination station they just won't excess the return portion only – though I haven’t tried for some time, I kind of gave up in the end.
