Excessing a fare Manchester to Halifax

I've just realised that the 'via Hebden Bridge' route this coming Sunday is subject to bus replacement so I'd sooner travel back via Huddersfield.

I want to excess the return portion of an 'Anytime Return' which cost me £12.80 (the via Hebden Bridge ticket)

Am I right in thinking that the correct excess would be to an Offpeak Return valid via Huddersfield which costs £15.80?

However, because I'm only excessing half the journey, I should expect to pay half the difference, that being £1.50?

I've just tried to excess the fare. The ticket person said it would be £3. When I suggested the ticket guide said otherwise she asked me to produce evidence, which I didn't have, of course. I'll contact Northern Rail about this. There may be a training issue here.

I assume she got confused with overdistance excesses, which must be applied to both legs. A change of route excess can be applied to half of a return, though.

Change of route excess procedures are attached. You need the "Return tickets - change of route in one direction only" part towards the bottom of the second page.

Update: After an amicable exchange of communications with customer services at Northern Rail I've been given a refund for the ticket I ended up buying and I've been promised that the 'excessing' situation will be addressed.

Issue sorted in less than a week. Well done Northern Rail!

Wonder what the issue is. Issuing an excess is as easy as selecting the type (i.e. change of route, easy), the portion (return, easy) and the ticket number, date and price paid (printed on the ticket, easy)! I am guessing it is the 'overdistance' change confusion...

I think it is quite easy, but I do know clerks that struggle to get to grips with it. The process is in a slightly different order on STAR, though the clerk clearly knew how to get an excess fare from the machine. I'd agree that the clerk probably wasn't aware they only had to charge half on this particular excess type though.
