I’ve scoured the NCOT and it would appear it can be done (when did this come in as I was told over 30 years ago it can’t be done due to possible fraud?) but how? What is the correct way to do this on the Fujitsu star? Excess only incorporates the 3 usuals of over distance/class/route and now peak period.

Many thanks.

It was added some years ago (possibly around 2015, but that's a guess). How would you do it? As a change of ticket type. It's actually detailed in the excess procedures on board a train, but not at a station, even though it can clearly be done at a station as well. The important thing is that it should be done before the validity of the single has expired - not just time validity but journey as well so before arrival at the destination.

That isn’t on our version of star, The only way I can see it to be done possibly is for a Frankenstein approach via manual fares which surely isn’t correct? I’m lost and the NCOT isn’t particularly clear, what is there to stop fraud also due to many unstaffed stations now along routes? It would be interesting to know what toc’s retailers and clerks know of this and know how to correctly do it.

You can't do a change of ticket type excess? I find that hard to believe. What do you do is someone with an Off Peak ticket wants to travel at 'peak' times?

No, there’s no correct way to change a single into a return correctly, no buttons or options at all.
You can, presumably, change an Off Peak Return to an Anytime Return? If so, you simply do the same process - an Off Peak Single to an Off Peak Return (or whichever ticket types are relevant).

That’s a different scenario to changing a single to a return, one is excess due to validity and the other is well I don’t know, you’re creating something from effectively nothing. A single excess from another single ticket to class, over distance or route is simple enough but to effectively butcher it from a single to return is something I’m not familiar with (certainly doesn’t mean it’s not correct) nor know how to do.

The options on some TIS systems as I understand them are Overdistance for travelling beyond the destination, Change of route for same journey but different route, and Peak Period for upgrading from an off-peak to a peak ticket of the same type. Unfortunately that doesn't allow change of a single ticket type to a return ticket type; so SVR-SOR or CDR-SVR is OK, as would be CDS-SDS, but CDS-SVR is not an option. A manual excess ticket would be the only option, but admittedly quite messy.

In which case I can only suggest asking the relevant people in the TOC's Retail Systems team how it should be done.

I was thinking that and similar to aptis creating fares gets very messy and easy to put wrong route in.

Ah ha now you see that’s the thing. I’ve spoken to a few people and they’re equally confused, the NCOT are in my view purposefully vague and opaque, granted this is a rare thing but it will happen more and more with ticket on collection.

It's a little bit of a workaround.

Set up the *return* fare.
Press Excess From
After entering the ticket number and date, change the cost to the *single* price
Then select Peak Period and change Show More Fares? to a tick if you need an off peak fare
Then select the return fare on next screen and you will be given the option of the excess for the difference

On our STAR mobile machines on the excess screen there are a number of options including single to return, over distance excess 1 leg, or both legs (plus other options which I cant remember). I've managed to excess singles to returns a few times!
