Excess question

Hopefully someone can assist with me with this quick question as it's been a while since I've asked for an excess fare

My ticket is a Kentish Town - Ryde Pier Head Rtn with Railcard (£38.50). I need to travel onwards to Shanklin instead

1. Do one way excesses still exist? If so is it still half the difference? £43.35 - £38.50 = £4.85 then half it gives £2.43

2. Any tips on where to get an excess? Waterloo station itself? On the Waterloo to Portsmouth train (SW trains). Are any of these options well known for not liking excesses

1. They don't technically exist for over-distance excesses, but many staff still issue them.

2. Some SWT guards are non-revenue, which means they will be unable/reluctant to take your money. I'd recommend doing it at a ticket office (ideally before starting the journey).

If you are only going to Shanklin in one direction, a single ticket (£2.45 with railcard) is cheaper than the excess.

But don't do it at Ryde Pier Head as the railway booking office is manned by Wightlink and I don't think rail appointed travel agents are allowed to issue excess fares.

I've also discovered an 'Island Line Evening Return' for £2.40. It's tomorrow evening I'm travelling so that could work out well.

I see you've found a solution but the guards on the Island Line are quite good. Once I brought a Y-P Off Peak Return Shanklin-Sandown and boarded the return leg at Brading. The Guard quite happily offered me the 15p Excess!

Don't forget you can buy your tickets on the train on the island too so no need panic when you get off the ferry.

No! By the time he boards at Ryde pier head his ticket will have ceased, and he'll be looking at a new ticket. In my opinion, it needs to be excessed before it becomes fully used.
