I have the return portion of a ticket portsmouth to eastleigh.

I now need to travel back from Southampton.

Travel Southampton to portsmouth appears valid via eastleigh according to NRES.

can I excess the return or do I need a single Southampton to eastleigh? If I can excess the return is the ticket then valid on the direct trains?

Thanks

If you can bring a printout of the booking engine saying it's valid on the exact trains you're using, I would do that and nothing more.

If you can't, see if you can get an excess before you travel. The policy on whether or not to excess whole/part tickets and when to do it varies between TOCs.

An overdistance excess is fine in your case. The excess is 10p but remember that you must obtain this before boarding the train. Otherwise it will be a new ticket for the additional distance or a Penalty Fare.

I am sure that Eastleigh to Portsmouth is permitted via Southampton but strangely no booking engine is validating it. No major issue here though as the difference is a grand 10p.

It isn't reversible AIUI. Southampton to Portsmouth group is valid via Eastleigh, but Eastleigh to Portsmouth Group isn't via Southampton.

I think it's 'fallout' from those routeing guide changes that were made after a chap complained about not being able to travel from Basingstoke to Fareham via Salisbury, it came up for discussion some months back...

OK, it was then rather than is. That update removed a lot of reasonable routes.
