Excess Query WSMR

Hi chaps,

I have an excess query I would gratefully accept help with.

A passenger has a WSMR only routed Anytime return Cosford to London Terminals with a 34% promotional discount.

This passenger then wishes to excess this ticket to route any permitted and if it helps, can now travel off peak.

On the day the passenger was given a London U1 - cosford off peak excess at a cost of £23.xx which seems excessive given the off peak return is only £43.50 (but is obviously wrong because the passenger did not want U1).

On other occasions he has been charged a mere £1.75

What is the correct excess for this ticket?!

No Excess should ever be issued. Only a full price ticket.

£139 SOR (if origin station is staffed) £43.50 SVR (if station is unstaffed before boarding)

A new ticket should be issued as a TOC specific ticket cannot be excessed.

Also, as the person is buying on board they would be liable to pay the FULL fare if the facilities existed to pay before (s)he boarded the train.

The ticket should not be excessed for use on another TOC, it is not allowed under the excess fares rules.

The correct proceedure would be to process the ticket for refund (minus an admin fee) if the ticket conditions allow and purchase a new ticket for the new journey.

The excess to a London zone 1 ticket would be an over-distance XS fare and therefore technically would not be for use by other TOC even though it is any permitted fare, I can't say if a guard/TM would allow it though.

Thanks for the help. The passenger was questioning the £23.50 over his usuals £1.75, so I don't imagine he'll be best impressed when I tell him it's now £43.50 a time! I suppose he's just been lucky thus far!

Is said passenger trying to excess his ticket ata station or on a train? He would only be able to buy the ticket with the Flex discount on a Wrexham & Shropshire only ticket on the a WSMR service and I cant see why he would then want to upgrade it if traveling on WSMR.

The ticket should not be excessed for use on another TOC, it is not allowed under the excess fares rules.

When did this get disallowed? Booking offices used to be quite happy to do it from Silverlink Only to any permitted.

It's always been disallowed (AFAIK!) but many booking offices do not realise this and allow it anyway. It's always worth a try!

It's a bit unfair really.

You get a London Midland Only and you cannot go via any other route and have to buy a brand new ticket.

Yet if you have a Route High Wycombe ticket you simply pay the excess!

Obviously some ticket clerks see sense and allow excesses regardless, but don't reveal which ones here in case a manager tells them off!
