Hi all,

Is it possible to excess an undiscounted ticket to a Y-P discount?

I have an Anytime Rtn Southampton Ctl - London Terminals, without discount, bought by work. Is it possible to excess that to a Super Offpeak Return to Newcastle, with Y-P discount? If it's not possible to excess an Anytime R to a Super Offpeak R, is it possible to excess tickets to discounted ones?

I know that seems perverse, but it's a very specific circumstance, involving tickets bought by my work.

Thanks,

Mark

You could do an excess from the ticket you have to the super off peak to Newcastle but whether you could also excess it to a YP railcard fare I am not sure, also finding someone able to do it might be difficult.

See if you can find a sympathetic ticket-office clerk, my view of excesses is that if the passenger is approaching with cash (and relevant documentation) in hand, then I'll do it, especially if they approach me, not wait for me to approach them.

The actual mechanism of an excess is easy, select the relevant ticket (including railcard if appropriate), the Avantex just asks for the amount paid for the previous ticket, type of excess (std to 1st, over-distance, change of route, or change of ticket type), date of ticket issue, and ticket number, and if it's a return ticket it asks for outward, return or both. The date of issue is the only grounds for rejection, usually.

How do you define "possible"? It's possible, yes. But the rules say no.

However you can obtain a refund, for which the £10 admin fee MAY be waived, and buy a new ticket. Note that the original purchaser would be refunded, so if this was your workplace you would need to agree it with them!

If you find a sympathetic ticket clerk they may do it - but be prepared to 'shop around' and they are not 'supposed' to do it.

Good luck, you'll need it!

Is there a specific term for a reverse excess like this?
A what excess?

He wants an over-distance excess, for both portions.

The instructions are:

Charge the difference between the fare paid and the appropriate Return fare for the throughout journey.

Railcard discounts are allowed provided the original ticket is discounted

"Appropriate fare" means the cheapest Single or Return fare available for immediate travel on the chosen service.

So the official rule is that the original ticket would need to be discounted in order for railcard discounts to apply. But some ticket clerks may be lenient in this respect. The OP may need to shop around but there is no guarantee of finding anyone prepared to do it.

Well, away from the OPs query, is it possible to "excess" from an Full Fare to a YP, so it is a partial refund?

A refund can be given to the original purchaser, a new ticket can then be purchased. The admin fee may be waived at the discretion of the person issuing the refund. Obviously the OP needs to discuss this with the original purchaser before proceeding with that option.

Tribute will not allow a downward excess. If the new ticket is less than the old it is still a balance of 0.00

If we gave money out we would have a end of shift loss. The only route would be what Yorkie said.

I cant say about other TIS.

Indeed. Illicit excesses cause "ATOC losses", somethimg which will come back to bite anyone dim enough to do excesses without checking the rules first! Hence, I will not do anything unless I'm 100% backed up by the rulebook, that extends to errors in the TIS software which mean that customers are undercharged.

The Avantex machine will only allow a zero-fare excess if the ticket is cheaper than what was paid. The only way we (as a seller) can give a refund for a ticket is from the same machine, before it's shut down for the day.

Otherwise, it's letter to Customer Service time
