Excess off-peak Euston to Crewe to anytime?

Hi all,

Is it possible to pay an excess at a ticket office or onboard to use the return portion of an Off-Peak return from Crewe to Euston (i.e. the leg departing London)? The ticket has staff discount applied.

I’m unsure what time I will travel back on Monday, and may wish to travel back during the peak time window between 1500-1900?

In theory yes, but the excess would be greater than the cost of a new single fare so that should be sold instead.

You will need to purchase the new ticket before boarding, as Avanti ramp staff will refuse travel on the existing ticket before 18:45.

Or the difference in price between the singles is £18.15. Both cheaper than a whole new ticket.

I have used the fares set out on brfares.com.

As a reminder, the excess for change of travel time is charged at the full difference between the fare paid and the fare desired.

Looking at all-operator fares, the off peak return fare with PRV discount from Crewe to London Terminals is £24.80. The anytime return fare is £71.05. And the anytime single is £35.50. Accordingly, the excess from off peak return to anytime return would be £46.25. The anytime single is cheaper and should be sold instead.

You are mixing and matching all-operator fares with LNR & WMR ONLY fares. You can excess an all-operator fare to a LNR/WMR fare if you wish, though there is of course a substantial time penalty.

Or the difference in price between the singles is £18.15. Both cheaper than a whole new ticket.

The different in price between singles is irrelevant when excessing a return.

I naively compared the price of the off peak return to the anytime single rather than the anytime return.

Arguably, no excess is payable if you use WMT as they set a cheaper WMT-only Off-Peak, which has no evening peak restrictions (the WMT-only Super Off-Peak fares do have evening restrictions). That being said it may be a tricky argument to make since how do they know you didn't use WMT on the way down?

If you do want to travel on Avanti then buying a new "Any Permitted" Anytime Single and refunding the return portion of your existing Off-Peak Return will be cheaper. Depending on the calling pattern of your chosen train, a split at Milton Keynes/Nuneaton/Tamworth may be cheaper.

Thanks all - I think I’ll buy an off-peak single for travel tomorrow and then buy the relevant single on when my plans are finalised on Monday.

If you can get a WMT Off Peak Return tomorrow this will enable you not to have to worry what time you return Monday afternoon or evening. That is assuming though you are fine using WMT with the longer journey times.

Although if that's the case I'd get a Super Off Peak and only excess it on Monday if needed depending on what time you travel, which can be done on the train.
