Excess Off Peak Day Return to Off Peak Return

Simple question that I hope has a simple answer

I have bought an Off Peak Day Return from Birmingham to Nottingham. If I decide to stay longer than a day in Nottingham can the ticket be excessed to an Off Peak Return?

Yes but you're unlikely to be able to obtain the excess after the ticket's validity has expired. So if you turned up with a day return 3 days after it was valid you would probably struggle to get it excessed.

If you do this before departure from Birmingham, yes you can.

If you do this on arrival in Nottingham, while the ticket is still valid, then you might be able to.

Once the ticket has expired it has no value nor validity whatsoever, therefore it would not be appropriate to excess it (though I have known discretion to be shown in some circumstances)

It'll be a lot easier to simply buy the ticket once you've made the decision.

Obtaining an excess fare may be time consuming depending on the length of queues and the competence & experience of the booking clerk.
