My daughter has first class "room" reserved on Caledonian Sleeper from Motherwell. She would like to join the train which starts at Glasgow, and occupy her berth, rather than hang around at Motherwell.

What would be the appropriate action to take, ticket to purchase, etc to enable this to happen?

They can be slow to answer the phone, so alternatively email enquiry@sleeper.scot. They should be able to note to the crew that she's planning to board at Central.

She could just rock up, I can't see that any of their hosts would become officious about something like this but there's nothing to be lost by politely informing them.

I would be flabbergasted if anyone responds to the effect that she needs to buy a First Class single between Glasgow and Motherwell. Now that must be a rare ticket...

Cally Sleeper staff are amongst the most friendly I’ve encountered - this probably won’t be a problem at all.

The fares between different places on the Sleeper are generally the same anyway, and they know this

I’ve only ever started short on the sleeper (when I haven’t boarded where I should) rather than starting from further afield. Personally I think the advice here is good.
Your berth is yours for the night, but get In touch with them to be polite. They get In touch if there are delays.

She has e-mailed them, and there was absolutely no problem. Caledonian Sleeper Customer Service will notify the hosts on the train to expect her to join at Glasgow. Your advice was much appreciated.

Cheers for the update. I thought it was likely they would be reasonable, and they have been :)

Also according to their website no ticket sales on board anymore so any excess fares would be difficult ? (Except on those journeys operated as " day train " by Scotrail guard).
