Excess from London

I am wondering whether someone can help me. Alex’s younger sister bought a child Off Peak Return to travel from Deal to London and now needs to use the return portion himself. He has a 26-30 railcard. The ticket was £9.30. What is the correct excess please? I had a look although thought I would check to avoid them being fleeced - thanks!

There is no excess from child to adult fare. A new ticket will be needed and any unused portion of the child ticket can, in theory, be refunded but is realistically of insufficient value.

How come you can excess away a railcard but not child discount? :-/

If the outward portion has already been used by someone else then the return portion cannot be transferred, according to the National Rail Conditions of Travel:

5. Transfer of Tickets
5.1 A Ticket may be transferred by the person who bought that Ticket to another person, but only if:
[...]
5.1.2 the journey has not begun (for example, if you intend to transfer a return Ticket you must not have used the outward portion of that return Ticket, or if you intend to transfer a Season Ticket you must not have used it for any journeys already);

Edit: Also, BRFares seems to say a child Off-Peak Return from Deal to London would cost far more than £9.30.

That is a shame, it has happened on trains I have been on before. Maybe the rules have changed since then. That read made for interesting reading

Fundamentally there is no contractual or other right to obtain most excesses - they are offered (or otherwise) at the discretion of individual retailers/operators.

Individual members of staff might have been able to use an override function to issue an excess. But that does not infer that they were complying with industry procedures in doing so.
