Excess fare (over distance)

Excess fare is a new concept for me, so this is the Question.

I've booked two advance's, Eaglescliffe to King's Cross on a Grand Central service with the return on a Virgin Service (20.00 from KGX)via Darlington, Due to the fact the return is via Darlington it would be more convenient* to stay on the Northern service to Thornaby.
Having never excessed a fare before, how do I do it, is it a straight forward process or would it be easier just to buy two singles to cover the journey from EAG to TBY.

* By convenient, I mean easier to get from the platform to the car park. There are two of us travelling with a DSB rail card.

You won't be able to get an overdistance excess on an Advance (at least not without excessing to a walk-up). Eaglescliffe-Thornaby SDS is £1.55 each with DSB.

Thanks for that LexyBoy, I was just looking for a convenient way of doing it without breaking any rules, and I'd recently heard of excessing and thought it might have been a simple process. We will be getting picked up at the Station so it's six and two three's as to where we get picked up, and being on a train that calls at both stations, Thornaby was the easier option.
