Hi everyone

A couple of years ago I made a post about a ticket using a circuitous route, and how I was given a penalty fare for it even though it was valid.

Since that, I haven't been given any more but I have been charged a couple of times for an excess Fare.

What should I do? The excess Fare is a lot, but the route is probably unintentionally valid so I can see why the guards think to charge me.

I try to explain that I think it's valid but in the end they normally charge me.

Can be I dispute after the fact or not? It's annoying because unless something has changed, the routing guide says this is valid ( confirmed before by some forum members)

It's EMR if that matters.

Thanks!

More specifics would probably help. Even if the routeing guide declared this or that route to be valid, specific tickets may not allow all options.

If the fare is valid for the route and trains you're using (we would need the details to check, you could PM a Fares Advisor if you want to check without revealing the details publicly) then you are entitled to claim back any amount you're overcharged by, from the company whose staff charged you.

Of course, in the process of claiming that back (for example, if their customer service staff don't believe it's valid and so check with a Pricing Manager) the matter may be brought to the attention of someone who gets this possible 'loophole' closed.

You'll have to judge whether that risk is worthwhile taking, if this is a journey you make regularly.
