Excess an advance single to an off-peak return

Hi all, purchased an advanced single for my outbound leg, planning to return in a few days and assumed that two advance singles would be cheaper without checking.

Am I able to excess the ticket I purchased into a return ticket by paying the difference?

Ticket office said no unfortunately. Not too woried it is only a £15 difference.

You might get lucky but Advance tickets can only be changed before the departure of the first booked train.
