Excess advice required

Hi,

Little bit of advice required.

Planning to travel Cardiff to Swansea later today (after the speedway) and was wondering if my calculations was correct for a Standard to First excess.

Two people travelling on two together railcard. Ticket type held is a CDR Off Peak Day Return at £7.60 each.

FCR First Off Peak Day Return is £13.40 each, meaning the difference in fare is £5.80 each.

Because I'm looking to excess on the return leg only, I half the difference to make a total excess of £2.90 each.

Firstly, is my workings out right, and secondly, would I be able to excess on board, due to the usual queuing system in place at Cardiff, should I wish to do so?

They don't have to sell you this type of excess on board.
They are more likely to charge you for a weekend 1st upgrade instead, so I would get it from a ticket office.

Excess for change of ticket type is full price different even if only one leg. Only change of route can be done for half the difference.

As there is a ticket office at Cardiff Central you would need to buy before you board; however, Weekend First may be an option onboard.

The OP is seeking a change of class, however, which is the difference between the fare paid and the sum of the appropriate Singles for each leg (or the difference between the fare paid and the First Class return where this is cheaper).

The change of ticket type doesn't enter into things as it's a side effect of the change of class.

That said, the relevant Singles are £7.55 and £13.85, giving a difference of £13.80, so the Excess should be for the FULL difference of £5.80 as this is the cheaper option.
