Hypothetical situation but it got me wondering - say I buy an off peak single to, for example Wigan (from Southport), and en route I find out that my reason for going is no longer required (hotel overbooked, concert cancelled or something) - could I pay the extra 10p and get my ticket excessed to a return, or would it have to be a new one way ticket back?

I don't think there is an automatic entitlement to an excess however you should approach staff at the earliest opportunity either on the train or at the excess window on arrival at Southport. Once you leave the station at Southport, the ticket has been used and would no longer be excessable (may also be swallowed by the barriers too).

There isn't actually an off peak single for this journey but an anytime day single could theoretically be excessed to an off peak day return for 90p provided you left Wigan after 09.29.

There is a process for excessing a single to a return but it is specified that it should be prior to the (single) journey being commenced or, where that isn't possible due to lack of facilities, before expiry of the single ticket. Expiry occurs on arrival at the destination so you might get a sympathetic hearing if you immediately head to the ticket office but it isn't guaranteed and you don't have a right to it at that point.

I'd add that if the destination station has an excess fare window and you've not been able to do it before arriving, definitely try that first instead of the ticket office.

I've had success with on board staff on Southeastern doing this (after the ticket office at a station refused because """I bought the ticket online""").

A Star booking office system has no facility to do these, I have tried before, but Star mobile machines can do it, I used to have to ask the gateline staff to excess it, which they could, in the same way you cant excess away a railcard discount on a Star terminal, but the mobile machines can! If it was a CCST ticket, I used to non-issue it and sell a non-discounted ticket!

I don't know why you don't think Star can, as I use Star at my ticket office and quite often excess singles to returns.

Don’t know what Star is , presumably a type of ticket software, but can I ask if you’ve done this after the outward journey has passed?
It's a combination of hardware and software - a ticket issuing system - but it wouldn't know whether the journey has been completed, that's where the human comes in.

Star is indeed a widely used ticket issuing system. The rules say that staff shouldn't excess tickets once they have expired (i.e. once a single has been used to its destination), but of course you may encounter staff willing to use their discretion to still issue you with the excess. No guarantee of that, of course. Star itself is just a computer system and doesn't know whether or not the journey has been completed; it will do whatever the person using it tells it to do.

I did it lots of times for people who got off a DOO train and came straight to the ticket office having bought from a TVM at the origin, and refused it lots of times for people who came to the ticket office several hours (or days, in some cases!) later. That was pretty much standard practice where I worked.

Yes I have, on the grounds that they bought the single at a TVM from an unmanned Station and hadn't had an earlier opportunity to change their ticket from a single to a return.
