Well tomorrow is A level results day, and I've got really mixed feelings! :eek:

Anyway best of luck for tomorrow for anyone else receiving results!

I will get in first and say exams results are not what they used to be. Give them away for nothing now etc.

Don't worry about the results - you cant alter them now. if you did well superb. If you didn't don't worry. After tomorrow no one will care. If you don't get your first choice university don't panic. There are other universities available and they will be very happy to have you. Take your time and assess what is right for you. Don't be pushed or make hasty decisions.


BTW I got 4 A levles and an AS when they were proper exams but I am sure it will all be fine. After all they are well easy these days

My sister had been saying that exams she'd sat seemed more difficult than any of the past papers that she'd done before (in addition to it it being the start of many new syllabuses, with a variety of changes to the ways in which things were assessed) and is starting to go into full panic mode.

I felt it wasn't so much the content but the way it was worded.

I did hear it mentioned in the news on the radio this morning that less students have applied for university this year and some employers are now preferring apprenticeships and recruiting A-level students. Are we waking up to the fact that, despite with wishes of the government in 2002 that 50% of students should attend university, 50% of jobs do not require a degree?

no - we are waking up to the fact that employers think it is easier and cheaper to employ under qualified people and offer them sham apprenticeships than pay someone a proper wage and encourage proper education.

You mean that Apprentice Kitchen Porter (i.e. the one who washes the pots & pans) is a sham?

Works both ways, you can go to university getting yourself into debt for the sake of a piece of paper at the end of it saying you now have a degree in Media Studies (or other pointless subject) and expect to walk into a well paying job where you will make the most of that degree.

the point is many of them aren't real apprenticeships. I have nothing against a proper apprenticeship which gives you a trade. I have great problems with many of the so called modern apprenticeships which seem , to me, to be an excuse to underpay someone.

I agree ( and no one should expect to "walk" into a job graduate or otherwise) but if you want many jobs you need a degree. You certainly need a degree to enter one of the "professions" - there aren't many apprenticeships for lawyers, doctors or architects.

I would always recommend people go to university. It is great fun if nothing else & is very much "life affirming" but I appreciate for children today the cost is appalling and it isnt for everyone. I still have student debt form my time at university but it is nothing compared to costs today. I got my tuition paid & I even got a very small grant! I still needed the loan to pay for accommodation and subsistence even with a succession of cash in hand off the books jobs while at uni.

It would probably be too radical and controversial to suggest that higher end professional subjects should attract lower fees!

My sister (who comfortably made her first choice in the end) was looking through the grade boundaries for some exams this morning and remarked that some did seem quite low.

What's worth remembering whatever degree course students do there are some skills (academic and non-academic) that can be learnt. For those living away from home for the first time there's a lot to learn outside of what you do on your course and being surrounded by other people in the same position can be very useful.

You'll be fine as long as you put the effort in!

That's generally the way. With A levels there's no alternative to hard work.

I'm quite scared for tomorrow for a few reasons

English - Might not get the 9 that I want because of OCR's questions and the error in setting them

German - Might get a B in this which terrifies me , because my listening did not go well

Economics - Need A star in this to take it at my sixth form , and really scared that I didn't use enough external facts

Other than that I'm not too worried , but don't want to get too overconfident

Leaked Edexcel 9-1 Maths grade boundaries look pretty good though , might get 9 in that

I wish all the other members getting their results the best of luck tomorrow , and congrats to the A level guys last week

As long as you got the grades for College/Sixth form etc then it doesn't really matter what you got, so I wouldn't worry about it. Most Unis only want 5 A*-C grades.
