EWS Uniform question

Hi Everyone, wasn't 100% sure where to post this so apologies if its in the wrong section

But i am wondering if i could have some advice on EWS uniforms, when i was a bit younger i used to see an EWS driver in a tie and i carnt for the life of me remember what else he had on, ( looking to collect a similiar uniform ) all i remember was that he had a EWS Tie with Gold stripes diagonally across, which ive got.

Also where would be the best place to look for an EWS zip up fleece ?

Though knowing the freight boys it could easily have been tatty jeans and a t shirt!

Not sure about the look of the uniform but just a few places of thought you could try for some second hand bits of clothes:

Rail related forums (such as this one) have a lot of drivers and I'm sure there be the odd generous sole out there

eBay and other online "markets" contain a lot of railway collectables

Open days/Heritage days, a lot of local privatised lines hold special events to bring the public in and in my experience that always means additional stalls selling merchandise

Magazines: always somewhere that will either sell these things or reproduce things for you, just normally at an over inflated prices

Haha thank you for the advice currently ive got all my stuff of Ebay altpugh EWS also is a fishing fleece brand haha, ive managed to get so far a drivers bag, tie, h vis , and flask

also were would i post about asking about a fleece

I have managed to find you a page of bits and bobs related to EWS on ebay.
There doesn't seem to be much uniform on there at the moment, but it pays to keep an eye on it as some may come up.

I accessed it by going to "shop by category" Collectibles > Transportation > Railwayana and typing "EWS" in the search bar. Doing it like this should get rid of the fishing fleece results.

I'm not hugely familiar with EWS's uniform, however on the basis that a tie was issued I would imagine that some sort of branded V-neck jumper, or blazer would be supplied to go with it, maybe even a branded shirt.

Got around to doing some more research and from what i can see from pictures, the shirt and tie drivers either had a EWS fleece over the top or a EWS florecent Dust coat.

Both i can imagine will be fun to find ! D

I Do recall seeing an EWS chap wearing a Maroon Woolly Pully V Neck Sweater, heavy ribbed wool style with Shoulder, Elbow patches & eppaulettes, he was wearing this over a white shirt & tie & it all looked very smart.

Hi, I think it may have had a logo on the chest.

I sometimes I have seen odd items of clothing, usually baseball caps or ties on their website, but there is nothing at the moment, I looked under disposals.

i have a feeling that finding a jumper,fleece is going to be a challange haha

Well you never know what may turn up at second hand stalls etc (Especially rail related ones)

Under EWS days we were issued with following uniform !!

Lightweight Summer Trousers (dark blue just a lighter material)
Standard trousers (As above just heavier material)

Polo Shirts ( Maroon with embroidered badge)(latterly just before DB took over there were some dark blue one issued also several specials with SVG/Driver instructor etc embroidered below badge>

Shirts were light blue (choice of short or long sleeved)

Ties started plain maroon with EWS badge, latterly gained some yellow diagional stripes.

Jumper Maroon very chunky wool with shoulder and elbow patches and sewn on embroidered badge

fleece again maroon with embroidered badge (latterly these went dark blue as well)

All weather coat with maroon mac style coat with transfer type badge.

Plus all Hi-vis PPE etc with EWS branding

Also you could order a leather belt with EWS embossed into it !!!

With regards of getting some, I would say you'd be very lucky as for obvious reasons drivers don't put them on auction sites etc. Also that has been occasions where certain members of society try and obtain free rail travel !!!
We were tol basically just bin it, but it is quite good kit, my lockeris full, sometimes the EWS fleece gets an airing !! but strictly speaking we are upposedto wear DB atire on duty !!

Also trouble being is that management also trawl across places like ebay for uniform and your in big grief if your selling whilst still being employed. Usually resulting in losing said employment.

I would say they may be a few ex-EWS blokes that do preservation railways so have an ask around you never know

I was at the Crewe Rail Centre on Saturday and saw there was a couple of stalls selling EX BR jackets and caps.

The Heavy Maroon Jumper that the above post mentioned can be bought from a firm called Outdoor Knitwear in Leicester, located in the "Woolly Pully" Section. You can also sometimes pick these up from Army Surplus stores and stalls in some market places, make sure you get wool rather than acrylic though.

I see you are on the Great Central Railway. I hear that the plans for extending that line to the North have had another boost recently which is great news. I was on the GCR last year on a Gala day in September which was fantastic. I have also been on a UK Railtours Special Charter train from London which after going around some goods only lines in the East Midlands, then reversed along the GCR (N) Line to Ruddington. That was another good day too.

Yes that wool Pullover does look very good, but it's rather too large for me too.
