EWS/DB Class 67 Names

I went down into Cross Gates the other day to see the RHTT come through and it was top and tailed by 67001 and 67022.

What I was wondering is that I know that 67001 was once named "Night Mail" but when I saw it, there was no name plate and I have looked at other peoples pictures and have seen the same.

Has something happened or has it just been de-named?

certainly has been de-named for quite some time as i had it on a railtour from Eastleigh to Llandudno sometime in may...and again it was de-named then...

I expect it will be something to do with EWS losing the Royal Mail contract that they originally acquired the 67s to perform. RM moved away from rail some years ago now.

What i do know is that the mail operations are currently operated by DRS but will be moving back to EWS/DB

Sorry, what I wrote wasn't quite what I meant! They scaled back their use of rail in about 2003-4 IIRC, leaving many of the nearly-new 67s temporarily redundant. Then of course as we know, they found use as thunderbirds, sleeper haulage, on charters and for loco-hauled passenger services. WNXX reports none are now stored.

But I can imagine EWS being rather put out that having made that investment RM then pulled the rug from under their Bo-Bos.

The 'plates disappeared around late 2004, during return to traffic repairs, which funnily enough coincided with the visit of Keith Heller to Margam. Not suggesting the two are linked in any way...
