EWS class 66 convoys

Hi all,

I was at Newport Central back in August and a convoy of class 66's passed through.

This was the first time I have seen one of these, does anyone know if they are common? Are they booked movements?

Any ideas where this would this have come from and where would it have been going?

The locomotives were:

66126, 66185, 66094, 66171, 66129 & 66140

Light engine movements from freight yards to depots and vice versa. Class 66 convoys are a regular occurence around the country, as balancing moves either to ensure there are enough locos where they are needed or to get locos back to depot for maintenance. It uses up less paths by running a number of locos together when they are heading to the same destination.

A convoy through Newport would most likely be heading to or from Port Talbot/Margam.

Most I've seen is 8 through Donny. Are these still referred to as 'tactical' movements?

Very much so, its a Tactical Light engine movement.
The Loco convoy would have come from Margam, as it was routed through platform 4 (godfrey road) at Newport Central. Destination of Convoy is either Newport ADJ yard, Bescot or St Blazey

There were quite a few posts on local gen groups reference these moves from Margam/Newport ADJ to Westbury for weekend engineers diagrams.
