Evil Guard

This was something that happened about a year back:-

I arrived at Worcester Foregate St at 16:02 and I promptly ran up the stairs to Platform 2, in order to catch the 16:05 service to Droitwich Spa (to Shirley) as I had to get home early, in stead of my usual 16:23 service. I got up the stairs and it was still 16:02; I looked at the guard, whom was half leaning in his doorway, and he looked back and smiled... and he reaches in quickly and presses the door close button. I watched the doors seal right before my eyes; the guard looks at me again and you can tell he enjoyed that. I then told the driver (by which time it was time to depart) what had happened and he said he'd tell him off for doing as such.

I know it's expected that the doors will close 30 seconds before departure time but that was just ridiculous. A whole 3 minutes! Boy did that make me angry

Has anyone else had a story similar to this?

I've had it happen twice. In the same station, for the same train, with the same guard. Running down footbridge, both guard and dispatcher seeing me, clock at :20. I saw the driver with his head out of the window. I press the button on the front door. Nothing. I ran down the side of the train, and by the time I got to the guard's door, he had turned the key and I had to watch the door close in front of me. He was smiling. The dispatcher had made a hasty exit, so there I was, on the platform, waiting another 30 minutes until the next train.

I assume you both complained to the relevant TOCs rather than just airing your annoyance on this forum?

But in the case of 172 if you had 3 minutes to go before departure why didn't run down to the Guards local door or if they were dispatching from the cab ask them nicely if you could board through their cab door? Plenty of times I've seen guards allow stragglers to board through the cab if they've locked up the passenger doors but not closed their own.

I assume you both complained to the relevant TOCs rather than just airing your annoyance on this forum?

I emailed London Midland On the day and the reply came back along the lines of 'we apologise that such an event has occured. We will look into the matter and we hope this will not happen again.' - well I didn't expect much more of a response.

But in the case of 172 if you had 3 minutes to go before departure why didn't run down to the Guards local door or if they were dispatching from the cab ask them nicely if you could board through their cab door? Usually I do this as I've done it a few times before, but this time it was different. As I came up the stairs and turned left to the nearest set of doors (towards driver), another person turned right for a different set of doors (guard's end) and the same thing happened to him. He was nearer the guard so he asked first; when I got there I heard the end of the guard's reply: '...no.' That was when I decided to tell the driver, but it was time to leave as I said.

I presume you contacted LM's customer relations department? Past experience has told me that rarely gets you anywhere and I now always go to the top. If the same thing happens to you again, write to the MD - detailing the incident.

ATW do that with the class 150's, of course they never do it with the 175's

Fair enough then.

Take a 100 lines. Not that I can speak, I have done something similar in the past. These threads re evil guards could also relate to bus drivers closing the doors when they can see people running for their buses too.
