Some interesting documents posted on the London Borough of Hillingdon website concerning Chiltern's plans for a new down through line at Northolt Junction / South Ruislip:

Thanks for the post. Impressed that this scheme will allow 100mph running throughout the Northolt / Ruislip area once the junction remodelling is complete. Done this route quite a few times, and you're certainly aware of the varying lower speeds and junction feel through the area. After the works, it will be a speedier through run.

Once E3 complete, Chiltern Railways will have a great service to Birmingham taking only 15 mins longer than the Virgin tilt service. Deserves to succeed. Ought to attract as many people out of their cars as from other rail routes.

Will planning application go through on the nod? Or will Hillingdon delays things?

As the 'up' services will be able to run at 100mph regardless, there isn't much logic in delaying an equivalent upgrade for 'down' services.

I must say that the Chiltern services are immaculate compared to Virgin's expensive services. Chiltern have put in a lot of work to get the line to what it is now. And I would rather travel on the Chiltern Mainline to Birmingham than the WCML any day.

Does anyone think that the 390s are too cramped?

Fine for me :)

Surely you know how everyone else feels with the numerous debates about this

Having suffered one once more yesterday, indeed they are.

Two friends I had with me (not enthusiasts) were unimpressed also. Horrid things - the 350/1 we travelled on from Liverpool - Birmingham was much more pleasant.

No problems from me either in First or Standard class on the 390s :D

Same here, I was actually surprised how pleasant the 390s were last year in First of course, was expecting them to be far worse.

Still, it's good Chiltern are putting in this work - they deserve the extended franchise.

On my line though, there's always been talk of improving the capacity, woud be equally as nice if that got done - I am of course referring to the Hertford line which with passing points and upgrade of speed limits could be so much better.

I like the 390s too, especially if you travel in the bit under the pantograph where the roof is lower. I think of it as "cosy."

390s are pretty good in first class: comfy and modern. Standard class feels a bit toast rack and budget airline. Windows too small with thick pillars. This was because the trains were designed for 140mph operation and thicker pillars are requirement.

Chiltern Pullman are pretty comfy too with windows well aligned with seats. Quite acceptable ride for an hour or more.

From May 2011, evergreen 3 will give us a twice hourly Marylebone to Birmingham service taking only 15 mins longer than Virgin. Will revamped service draw passengers from Virgin ?

The chiltern service has come on along way in 20 years. There was a creaky twice hourly service out of Marylebone on the route towards Banbury and nothing went further than Banbury. And now look...

The japanese have shown that for those seat configurations, you need smaller windows and more of them. I think the 395s are a good example of this

As my username suggests, I've travelled on the shinkansen. Windows aligned with seats. Always get a good view of the passing (Japanese) scenery.
