The Chase asked today 'when was last BR steam engine 'Evening star' built'

They said answer was 50s, but im sure 'Evening Star' was made in febuary 1960 so that surely makes it 60s?

This is a good question for Trick Question enthusiasts. I suppose that it entered service in feb 1960, but it was probably mostly constructed before the end of 1959, probably before the workforce knocked off for the Christmas break, and they finished off the paintwork when they came back.

I thought it was outshopped from swindon though in everything i have read. Build date listed as febuary 1960. I did consider this.

Whenever a steam vs diesel argument crops up, I have great delight in pointing out that there are still some diesel locos in day to day use on the main line which are older than 'Evening Star' - for example 20301 (former 20047/D8047), 31105, 31106, class 08s numbered below 08665

Wikipedia says that it was built February 1960 and named on March 18th 1960 at Swindon.

Technically as a decade runs from the year ending in 1 to the year ending in 0, you could argue that 1960 was in fact the last year of the 1950s, so this is one of those questions for which you can argue the answer both ways!

( A century runs from January 1st xx01 to December 31st xx00 - it's the same principle but on a tenth of the scale; and yes technically everyone was a year early when they celebrated the millennium at midnight on 31/12/99... )

PS Traditionally a locomotive exists when the frames were constructed, so if we can establish the date 92220's frames were built...
