Hi all

Arriving from the North into Euston on Friday and I need to get to Hammersmith, what is the easiest way to get there?

Also on my return I am flying into Heathrow and need to get back to Euston for the train. What is the best way to get from Heathrow to Euston station?

thanks Li

Hello. Welcome to the forums! :)

For Euston to Hammersmith:
At a glance at my tube map, I would go with taking the Northern Line (Southbound) from Euston to Leicester Square. There, change for the Piccadilly Line (Westbound) and take it as far as Hammersmith. When you get to Euston Tube station, you will almost certainly find some Tube Maps if you need them. They're free.

For Heathrow to Euston:
You could take the Piccadilly Line (Eastbound) from Heathrow (Terminals 2 & 3, 4, or 5) to Leicester Square. There, change for the Northern Line (Northbound) to Euston. This is essentially the same journey as before but reversed and from Heathrow instead of Euston.

Note that none of these trains have air conditioning, so prepare for a hot ride if the weather is particularly sunny! :) This is just the way the Tube works, I'm afraid. Only the Circle, District, Hammersmith & City, and Metropolitan Lines are air-conditioned.

Key to Lines and Colours:

Northern Line - Black
Piccadilly Line - Dark Blue
Circle - Yellow
District - Green
H&C - Pink
Metropolitan - Burgandy/purple

Hope this helps.

I assume your destination is near Hammersmith Underground (tube) stations (there are two, but they are very close together).
The simplest way is to walk forward out of Euston station towards Euston Road, turn right and walk to Euston Square Underground.
Then catch a train to Hammersmith from the "westbound" Platform 1.
(Note: there are building works at Euston National Rail but routes are signposted).
On your return I would use the Piccadilly Line tube from Heathrow to Green Park, then change on to the Victoria Line Northbound, which will bring you to Euston Underground station itself.
If you do not already have an Oyster card, then use a contactless card to pay.

You can, if you prefer, take the expensive but fast Heathrow Express train to Paddington and then the underground from Platform 14 to Euston Square.
Platform 14 is to your left as your train arrives at Paddington.

Peter C has given another route which is also straightforward.

Another good suggestion. I don't know the Euston area at all so I can only go based off of the map!

Another option to avoid the high fares of Heathrow Express but still avoid Tube trains would be to get the TFL rail service (previously Heathrow Connect in to Paddington and then the Circle/Hammersmith & City line from there.
Also of you don't mind a bit of a walk then to avoid changes on the Underground you could get the Piccadilly line to Kings Cross St Pancras and walk from there.

I disagree, the best way to Hammersmith is to take a direct Hammersmith & City/Circle line train to Hammersmith from Euston Square.

With Heathrow it depends on the Terminal, but I'd be tempted to take TfL Rail to Paddington, and change for the Hammersmith & City line to Euston Square.

I'd take the Hammersmith & City Line from Euston Square to Hammersmith. Air conditioned and probably a better option if the OP has luggage.

Coming back I'd do Piccadilly Line to Green Park and then Victoria Line to Euston, or Piccadilly Line to Leicester Square and Northern Line to Euston.

I strongly discourage the use of the Heathrow Express as it is an absolute rip off (something like £22 each way off peak iirustc). It os the quickest way from Paddington but it's only about 10 minutes quicker from Euston.

I would also avoid TfL Rail from Paddington at the moment, as it only runs every 30 minutes so it can end up taking longer than the Piccadilly Line which runs every 5 minutes.

The H&C, District, Circle, and Metropolitan lines are air-conditioned and if you have luggage then they can be easier to use as the trains are at the same levels as the platforms. Use these as much as possible. The Piccadilly line can be a long journey from Heathrow to central London.

About 10 minutes slower than the Heathrow Express....
Exactly - slower. :)
The Heathrow Connect service does not call at any of the intermediate stations on the GWML between Heathrow and Paddington*. The Piccadilly calls at all of the stations along that line.

Check times when you arrive but Heathrow to Padd on TFL for Tube to Euston Square is the one I do a lot and seems a better run than the Tubes Piccadilly line(more to see!)
The hike around Green Park if doing the Piccadilly line can also be a pain.

I would certainly recommend going to Hammersmith via the Hammersmith and City from Euston Square. The walk from Euston mainline to Euston Square takes about 5 to 10 minutes depending on how fast you walk and whether you are towing luggage. If it is bucketing with rain and you don't fancy getting soaked, you can stay in the dry by taking the Victoria line northbound from Euston to Kings Cross St Pancras, and changing to the Hammersmith and City there.

The trip from Heathrow to central London on the Piccadilly line can seem to take an eternity, but in practice is little longer than taking the Heathrow Connect and changing at Paddington, by the time you have added in the time to make the connection. If I were doing the trip, particularly if carrying heavy luggage, I would change from the Piccadilly to the District at Barons Court, where it is a simple cross-platform transfer. Take a District via Victoria, and change there to the Victoria line to Euston.

Some of the interchanges between tube lines can involve very lengthy walks, such as the interchange between Piccadilly and Victoria lines at Green Park, and significant numbers of steps. At Victoria, the interchange FROM District TO Victoria line is fairly quick and easy via an escalator or lift (the reverse interchange FROM Victoria TO District line is NOT so easy, as there is currently a long diversionary walk).

The "tube" web-site is at https://tfl.gov.uk/
It has maps, and a good journey planner to give you an idea of how long it is likely to take you, but beware that it is somewhat optimistic. In particular, it doesn't seem to allow time to get to and from the tube platforms, or much time for interchanges. For the journey from Heathrow it will recommend using the Heathrow Express as the quickest route, however as others have already said, this is a rip-off. If you want it to find a route not using HEx, then you need to go into options and unselect the "National Rail" option.
