Small family emergency means I need to travel with my 13yo from London to Edinburgh on Sunday 30 August. Return via lner the following week all good and booked with one perks and good seats.

But avanti is eus-Edb via Preston, and offers seat reservations from the Preston-Edb leg (and I can chose seats with a window view!). However the long leg from eus to Preston I cannot reserve a seat - how likely is is that we would have to stand? Fairly flexible on times but eying the 10.39 ex Euston. Any hep much appreciated!

If you can't get a seat reservation on the Glasgow fast then the best bet is to be at Euston early so you can be one of the first to board when the train gets announced. If it's a 9 coach then aim for coach C, if it's a 11 coach then G & U are also unreserved.

If you can get to Euston in good time, you can pretty much guarantee a seat, just keep an eye on realtime trains and be at the platform (or at least the entrance ramp to it) as soon as it arrives on its inbound journey.
On a 9 car there is only 1 unreserved carriage, Coach C, and it shares with the shop, on 11 car trains there are full size coaches U and G unreserved.

What message is it saying when you try to make a reservation? Is it offering you a reservation without a seat?

Thanks all, for the first leg is says
No seat reservation

Take any available seat

On any train your ticket's valid for, in the right class of travel.

Actually realised this train is Euston-Lancaster then Lancaster - Edinburgh not Preston as I originally thought!

Given it's a Bank Holiday weekend (though not in Scotland) and the Edinburgh Festival's on, it's highly likely all the reservable seats are booked on that particular train and they've fallen back to "counted place" reservations (required due to use of the "Mandatory Reservations" flag.)

Oh...And Preston are playing Charlton in London on Saturday, so it's likely some supporters will spend Saturday night in London and return home on Sunday.

The East Coast being closed south of Peterborough will also have had a significant effect on that.

Last day of the festival is Sunday, so fingers crossed ok for northbound. The Lancaster Edinburgh train has plenty of reservable seats too which is a good omen. We will be at Euston super early. Thanks again! Hopefully the Preston supporters will be quiet given it’s their return journey the day after (and good luck to them :)
