How dies it work if the oyster is down, presumably if you touch in at EUS underground after touching in at a station on the overground from Watford Junction it assumes you went via Euston (and vice versa), or is it not that intelligent?

In relation to the DNO side of things. Who actually maintains the electric supplies? Is it UK Power Networks seeing as they are the DNO for London and the South East or do Network Rail have a separate DNO who does the work for them?

I travelled back up from London on Thursday afternoon and expected the station concourse to be jam packed with people and the trains to be full, but the 1343 from Euston back up to Glasgow was relatively quiet even though TOC's were allowing tickets that should have been used on the Wednesday.

In London it UKPN that is the host DNO and who supplies the electric connections. There are no independant DNOs as such but there are IDNOs ( Independant ) that can do connections onto the host DNO network and act as a de facto supplier

Yeah we call them Independent DNO's at work as they assign their own unique MPAN distribution codes but they fall back onto the host depending on the MPAN area if any problems arise.

That's the ones, NR don't use them but some TOCs have and then run into major problems

Regarding LEDs, it was me that mentioned them, and it wasn't regarding festoons, it was more a suggestion that the main station lighting should be replaced with LEDs, some of which could then remain lit by battery power (potentially even local Li-Ion battery power) for quite some time in the event of an emergency.

Surely if there is one organisation that could operate an independent distribution system it is the railway?

Oyster can be made to assume incomplete journeys are to a particular location, rather than applying the maximum fare, though I don't know how it's implemented or if it was done this time. (I know it is possible because I've seen it done for major events at Alexandra Palace: Oyster readers turned off, all gates open, and announcements along the lines of "you don't need to touch out, you will be automatically charged the correct fare.")
