Can anyone explain why the 20:02 from Euston to Chester has disappeared for booking despite being in the published May - Dec timetable ?

For what date? If there is any engineering work (such as this week) its always the first service group to get binned.

Avanti have dropped to a limited timetable from late July until early September - they have got to allow all of the new drivers/guards to have Annual Leave after their courses/route learning before Decembers new timetable.

I'm Canadian.... are UK workers allowed to bank their Annual Leave like they do in some North American jurisdictions and take it in future years?

Not universally. Some employers may allow a few days to be carried over (my non-rail employer did so in the aftermath of Covid), but not your full annual allocation, and not indefinitely.

No. There's a legal entitlement and requirement to take a certain amount of days off.

(Some employers allow days to be carried over, but not where it would take someone below the legal minimum)

The UK legal minimum for a full time worker is 28 days including bank holidays (North Americans read it and weep :) ) and this cannot be carried forward - more so than that, the employer needs to make reasonable effort to *ensure* it is taken, they can't just accept employees forgetting to take it. Only leave above this can be, though in the UK most people get in excess of this and can often buy more, I get 30 days by buying up from the default. (What is the typical annual leave for railway staff?)

How limited, or is that being discussed elsewhere?

Certainly not with traincrew. As a driver our Annual leave is rostered and must be strictly adhered to unless in exceptional circumstances. Why would traincrew not want to take their summer annual leave?

Most TOCs is 25 days plus 8x BH and there is no increase with length of service. The usual carryover (without sign off) is 3 days which must be used within the first 3-4 months of the following leave year.

Normally until the end of the financial year for loose days but without specific permission full weeks cannot be carried over for traincrew at my TOC.

It's not common I guess, but some people have dreams that can't be fulfilled within the normal leave pattern and are preparred to forego their regular holidays to achieve it. I had a colleague who took 3 months leave in one go and used it to ship his prized motorcycle to America, ride the length of the continent from North to South and then ship it back again.

As I’ve said, that has to be agreed. It’s not commonplace. Managers & union are usually involved to agree such things. Our holiday rosters are strictly observed by all concerned for fairness.

I booked Mrs. W on it a week last Friday[14th July], and she was impressed - the fastest journey from London to North Wales as it doesn't divide at Chester. It even overtakes TFW's 2136 from Crewe to Holyhead at Chester!
With that in mind, she fixed some engagements in London until 1930 and when I tried to book her on it again next Wednesday, it had vanished without trace!
Time was, trains ran at least from the start of the public timetable to the end, and sometimes for years. Now they disappear after two months!
How does AWC get away with it?

It's not the only summer period Avanti cancellation.
But you can be sure they always start with the Euston-Holyhead services (sometimes cut back to start from Crewe).
In this case you'd catch the 1957 Euston-Liverpool and change into TfW at Crewe for Holyhead, but it loses the best part of an hour on the through service.

Thank you for your suggestion but the 1957 ex Euston seems to have also vanished into thin air next week!
Her options seem to be 1943, changing at Crewe into what would have been the 2002 direct, or, if its a bit tight to make that, then 2110 with 30 minutes to view the delights of Crewe and a 40 min. fester over midnight at Chester, getting home 2.5 hours later than planned!
I know there are "alternatives" but, this just endorses the frequent frustrating comments in these columns re AWC's lack of customer care. Is it too unreasonable, all other things being equal, to expect a train in the timetable one week to be there the next?
