EUS - BHM which Virgins are Pendolinos?

I'm travelling down on April 13th and back up on 15th and will to book according to train type. I know VTWC departures from Glasgow are Pendo's at certain minutes past the hour and Voyagers at others. Could someone educate me as to the situation ex EUS and ex BHM?

Although specific trains are booked either 221 or 390 they don't necessarily follow a strict pattern. The Shrewsbury service will obviously be a 221. The 221s tend to be on 43s off Euston and 10s off new st as they are the anglo-scot services, but 221s are also diagrammed on some turn back services from new st.

Most EUS-BHM Virgin Trains are Pendolino, except the Shrewsbury and a couple of the EUS-BHM Scotland trains, best place to look is Real Time Trains[RTT], it will say either 390 emu which is a Pendolino or dmu which is a super voyager, think RTT is pretty accurate.

Realtimetrains is usually correct for Virign West Coast where services timed for Pendolinos are Pendolinos.

A word of caution: Open data websites such as OpenTrainTimes and Realtimetrains etc show the timing loads (click that link for more information); these are not necessarily the same as the likely allocations.

However I agree that on this route, the timing load is likely to indicate the booked traction.

If you want a pretty good way of finding out a 221 for a service, you might have to do a bit of detective work, but if you trace any ECS from either LNWR at Crewe, Central Rivers, Holyhead, or some of the ECS moves from Polmadie in Glasgow, you can then follow their movements and this will give you a crude idea of where they'll end up.
Also anything involved in a trip to Liverpool or Manchester will be a guaranteed 390, and anything coming on/off Longsight and Edge Hill. . We don't have any 221s on diagrams to those locations.

The voyagers to/from Edinburgh via New St are 1243 & 1643 northbound and 0851 & 1852 southbound during the week. All others are planned as pendolinos.

The voyagers to/from Glasgow via New St are 1143 & 1343 northbound and 0550 & 1000 & 1740 southbound during the week. All others are planned as pendolinos.

On Saturdays this changes, 1343 & 1543 northbound and 0800 & 1200 southbound. All others are planned as pendolinos.

On Sundays this changes, 1740 northbound and 1355 & 1837 southbound. All others are planned as pendolinos.

Just about to hit the Pay button for a first class £27.00 BHM to EUS April 15th and I see that Virgin have allocated a rearward facing seat near the loo. Can I change this? Or is it likely to be sufficiently lightly loaded for me to find a better seat?

You should be able to find seat you like in First class on Birmingham - Euston, just get on early and wander through, I have never had any problems sitting in different seat to the one booked.

You will no doubt all know this, but further investigation shows that if I book through the Virgin site there is a seat selection tool. I had been on the Nat Rail Enqs site, which sent me to Southern (as I had booked other journeys) which didn't allow any seat influence.

Lesson learnt.

One thing I can tell you for certain, the 08:03 Euston-BHM on a weekday is a 5car Voyager, splits off an inbound and the other unit does the 08:10 Chester.

Inbound is 05:45 ex BHM via Northampton. Then returns as 09:50 ex BHM and presumably continues with 11:43 to Glasgow.

16:43 Euston is 10 car 221 splitting at BHM. 2nd unit returns to Euston at 18:30

The seat selection tool also indicates if it is a booked Pendolino or Voyager.

16:43 Euston is 10 car 221 splitting at BHM. 2nd unit returns to Euston at 18:30

0545 Euston-bhm via Northampton spilts at Euston. One set is returns Birmingham
The other set is to Holyhead.

You mean Holyhead? Monday to Fridays go Holyhead.
