The Brexit campaign should have Eurovision front & centre as a reason to leave and everyone else a bloody good reason to deduct money from the licence fee ! Otherwise playing some decent music on my laptop whilst perusing this forum and waiting for my partner's daughter to text me to pick her up ( having been in the pub since 4pm !)

With Wogan's boring unfunny commentary permanently out of the way I decided to watch some of it, both to see what the songs were like, and to look at the camera and lighting this year.

Sir Terry was the best thing about it. I need to give Graeme Norton a try but these days I seem to be out and about most Saturdays.

Perhaps I should tune into Sir Ken of Bruce's radio version next year if I'm out!

Eh? Eurovision is nothing to do with the EU. The top three (Ukraine, Australia and Russia) aren't even in the EU.

At best, you could point out that Freedom of Movement means that large immigrant populations influence the telephone/text voting in northern/western European countries.

I watched it - I raised a glass and polished off a bottle at the start of song 9 after Norton mentioned the one piece of advice he was given by Wogan - "don't drink before song 9!"...

I didn't think much to the winner to be honest. I quite liked the one with all the visuals though I can't remember which country it was

I did only catch bits of it overall, though I do like GN and his comments and I think the new scoring system worked better overall. Plenty of questions as to why Austraia are in it again this year :P

It is par for the course for such a transmitted television programme as this with its core element of unremitting dross to also have a complete lack of knowledge by its compilers of where the geographical borders of Europe are actually situated.

Many years ago when I last had to watch this programme, as we were visiting elderly family friends at the time who always seem to watch this every year without fail, I was reminded of the scenes in "The Ipcress File" where white noise was used as a method of sound torture used in psychological warfare to break the will of those forced to endure it.

Being a staunch Catholic (the word means "universal" and nothing to do with a particular place) and taking pity upon those unwilling souls who appear to be incarcerated by family members in the same room as that television programme, I called to mind a suitable text from the responses to the De Profundis (Psalm 130) that state...
"Look with an eye of pity on the suffering souls of Purgatory, put an end to their torment and lead them forth into everlasting joy"

I watched the entire programme, accompanied by 8 bottles of real ale and a bottle of white wine. I hasten to add that Mrs Greenback shared the refreshments with me.

I am ashamed of this. It is part of my therapy to openly admit my actions here, and I will strive to ensure that it never happens again.

I watched it in the background, but I did think the standard wasn't great this year. There's usually one or two passable songs but I didn't like any.

It's not supposed to be about politics, yet turned into a tussle between Russia and Ukraine :roll:

Whether you or I personally like Eurovision or not is completely immaterial to whether or not the BBC should be paying for it. The fact remains that a significant proportion of licence fee payers enjoy watching it, and therefore the BBC has a mandate to invest in it. I don't count myself as one of those who enjoy Eurovision, but I accept that a great many do and that this great many also pay into the licence fee pot.

I'm struggling to work out whether you genuinely think the organisers of Eurovision really don't know that Australia is in Europe. :roll:

Then again - I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed it. The half-time show, with it's "Perfect Eurovision Song" was an outstanding demonstration of Swedish sarcasm.
