Apologies if I've missed mention of this but Hungary has an excellent monthly ticket (Országbérlet, https://www.ujtarifa.hu/en) which is also valid on many busses and some local city's transport (including Budapest). It costs 18,900 HUF (approx £42 at time of writing) but do note that supplements / seat reservations on Inter City trains are not included (easy enough to buy on the MÁV app).

Also note that if you are over 65, you get free travel in 2nd class and on much local transport (just show your passport) but that IC supplements also need to be purchased.

For those who prefer a paper ticket, the Országbérlet can be purchased through BKK outlets in Budapest.

Worth noting that some hungarian trains run as one train advertised as both a "fast" train and an inter city...so you can pay a supplement and travel in the inter city part or not pay a supplement and travel in the more basic part. No idea if the door between the two section is locked or whether "fast" train passengers either in theory or reality shouldn't travel in the restaurant/bar car.
