According to ATOC's site, if you're travelling on FIP coupons in Germany, you don't need to pay any supplements to travel on either ICE or IC unless you want a seat reservation. However, a well-travelled friend (and FIP traveller) says I do need to pay one. Is this because you must have a seat reservation? Which is correct?

There hasn't been a requirement to pay a "zuschlag" (supplement) on ICE and IC trains in Germany when using FIP for a few years now. If you do want to reserve a seat the cheapest way is probably to get one from a ticket machine when you are over there (cost 4 Euro last time I did this).

Also be careful to check service is operated by DB.

Allsorts of little operators are now appearing, who depite their staff being issued with FIP, don't accept FIP themselves. Veolia HEX is one of many of them.

Indeed there are a number of Open Access Operators and contracted private operators by regional Government, DB services have a code S/R/RE/IRE/IC/ICE before the number.

All the services you can't travel on are HERE.

that list is probably not up to date as there's no sign of Agelis which recently started running Neumarkt/Ingolstadt-Regensberg-Neufarn in Bavaria. It's ridiculous that there are so many lines on which there are no DB trains
