euro driving licence

Hey all

myself and fellow trainees are now in possession of the new euro driving licences but we haven't been told a great deal about them as in the advantages etc.

does this mean you can technically drive for any company in Europe? do you have to have this before companies accept you as a qualified transferee for example? what are peoples opinions on them?

If you could speak the language of your host country fluently In theory I can't see why not?

I believe that's the theory but you would still need to be able to speak the language and pass the rules for the relevant country.

All the licence proves is that you have met the EU standard for medical and psychometric tests. You're competencies are held on the certificate - rules, traction and routes. To work on continental metals you will still need to attain competence in their rules, traction and routes with the same applying to any European driver wanting to come and work for a British TOC/FOC. To all intents and purposes should any driver want to go abroad they would still essentially be a trainee driver in that country.

You must also carry the card and certificate with you at all times on duty.

Before the licence came out there was always the possibility to drive trains in foreign countries and I would imaging that the licence will not change any rules for transferring, as previously said, you need to be able to speak fluently in the countries language and also pass their assessments, rules, traction and routes so in effect the licence is just a document to keep the euro rules in place, the same as the C of C that is currently used.
