Eureka! loco and coach

Those familiar with Eureka! the museum for children, beside the railway station in Halifax may know of the small diesel shunter and Mk2 coach that have been stood outside it on their own section of track for many, many years. These have never been painted as far as I can remember, until now! Today I passed on the train and the whole consist has been repainted into Northern rail livery, complete with yellow ends and TOPS style numbering! It looks fantastic, and I'll try and get a pic of it next time I'm passing through.

I'm just glad he used the word slightly in his sentence! A Northern Rail liveried Mk. 2 sounds quite interesting, may have to go for a look myself some time. The coach has been there, at a guess, at least 15 years.

Its been there as long as I remember from my own childhood visits, and i'm 21. Its needed a repaint for a while now, i'm just glad they havn't decided to scrap it and the loco.

Surpisingly, I think Northern paid for it. There was a banner with their logo and 'new education coach'. I was hoping they'd dump a pacer in there, but this is even better.

Just been on the Eureka! website, it says the coach is used for eating packed lunches in, and is closed until 29th January for refurbishement. In that its already been repainted, I bet they're going to do interesting things to its interior. Apart from that the rest of the museum looks even better then it was back in my day, makes me want to be 5 again :D

oh yeah!!! I remember having lunch on there on a school trip almost a decade ago!! :o

Yeah, I remember it being maroon on the outside, wasn't too much into trains then and can't say I looked out for it >.<

Sounds good, I'll have to keep an eye out next time I'm in the area! I had my dinner in that Mk2 many years ago, I used to love that place - good times :)

I took 2 photos today from passing trains, but neither turned out any good, theres too many trees.

However, if you can imagine it, both coach and loco are in blue, the purple and white swoosh is on the loco end of the coach. Both have a grey roof, the loco has white TOPS style numbers on its cabside 02???, the coach has the Northern logo at the ooposite end to the purple.

In all, it looks very smart but you'll have to ride through Halifax to see it.

There are two ex Virgin Mk2s at Eastleigh works, one of which has two experimental hopper windows fitted. During the Eastleigh works open day last year the two carriages were open for families to sit down, eat lunch and take a breather in, although due to the lack of functioning air con they were very hot. Still, it was one of the few times I was able to go inside an ex Virgin Mk2 since they aren't commonly seen on service trains (bar the odd charter) around Eastleigh!

At Railfest, the pendolino was being used like that because it was a hot day and it was plugged in and the air-con fully working. Never before or since has sitting in a Pendolino that isn't going anywhere been such an attractive idea.
