If we ask for an extension for any reason, would it be possible for just one of the smallest EU nations to refuse it and force us to crash out on 29th March with no deal? I can't believe the other 26 would allow that.

I believe that an extension requires unanimous agreement of the remaining members, so yes one nation could block it. The other 26 would not be able to stop them. I doubt that would happen at this stage but it is possible.

Remember how the UK was keen to keep its veto on even the smallest matters?

Medics for Brexit:

Physicians were unable to reach a consensus: Should Brexit take place? The Allergists were in favour of scratching it, but the Dermatologists advised not to make any rash moves.
The Gastroenterologists had sort of a gut feeling about it, but the Neurologists thought the Brexiters had a lot of nerve.
Meanwhile, Obstetricians felt certain everyone was labouring under a misconception, while the Ophthalmologists considered the idea shortsighted.
Pathologists yelled, "Over my dead body!" while the Pediatricians said, "Oh, grow up!" The Psychiatrists thought the whole idea was madness, while the Radiologists could see right through it.
Surgeons decided to wash their hands of the whole thing and the Chemists claimed it would indeed be a bitter pill to swallow. The Plastic Surgeons opined that May’s proposal would "put a whole new face on the matter."
The Podiatrists thought it was a step forward, but the Urologists were pissed off at the whole idea. Anesthesiologists though it was all a gas, and those lofty Cardiologists didn't have the heart to say no.
In the end, the Proctologists won out, leaving the entire decision up to the a**holes in Parliament.

Wow! That must be the most neutral post in the thread. :)

Friendly countries? Half of them we had wars with and the other half were German and Soviet cannon fodder!

Wow, I mean just wow. That is it then we best no make any friendly gestures or trade deals with any country we have ever been at war with.

Oh wait, that rules out most of the world.... What a stupid thing to say.

By my reckoning every EU country has suffered, within living memory, at least one of invasion, occupation, civil war or dictatorship - except Sweden, Ireland, Malta (but it came pretty close) and the UK. But none of these have happened since those countries joined the EU, whereas they continue to happen not far beyond its eastern border. I think this helps to explain why Continental people have more of an emotional attachment to the concept of the EU and why in certain countries you rarely see a national flag without an EU flag next to it.

By contrast a certain proportion of the British Brexiters seems to think we are still fighting WW2. The EU is a big part of the reason why we don't have to, and anyone who thinks that's a bad thing must be in a very worrying place indeed.

And we weren't fighting the Germans really, it was a group of nut jobs run by an Austrian who somehow managed to get enough people to believe that what he was saying was correct. It was more a case of the allied countries saving the Germans (and various other countries) from an evil dictator/regime.

At the moment there are 28 member states of the EU, so there are 27 others that will have to approve an extension. And yes, it requires an unanimous agreement among the EU27.

I wonder if post Brexit when as seems most likely the UK goes into a massive decline the EU will ever let us back in.
K
They would if we accepted Schengen and the Euro. This is the whole crazy thing, we have so many opt-outs, vetos and rebates once out we lose the lot. Why we can't cover out backs and slide into EEA/EFTA+ (more/less the Norway model) I don't know, but best would be to stay in and use our powers to the max.

Quite the ironic turn of events as many people in the UK are looking to the Germans to save us from a right wing minority group that has risen to power on the back of nationalistic propaganda with a nasty xenophobic undertone

Looking at the picture, the message seems pretty clear to me. In no way does it promise £350 million a week to the NHS. It merely suggests that some level of funding could be diverted in that direction. Seems perfectly reasonable to me.

That's not how more than 17 million people read it. Or were they gullible in believing the Leave hype ?

The remarks of Theresa May were a bit strange. Those windmills come from a firm in Denmark. And of course the problems are EU made; of course not the Conservatives!

What about the claim in this photo?

26809-7azh90.jpg

Picture of Boris Johnson stood in front of a banner stating "Let's give our NHS the £350 million the EU takes every week"

Is this also only a suggestion that "some level of funding could be diverted in that direction"?

Ok fair enough, missed that one at the time!

Oh yeh. Certainly looks like it though. Not saying the banner wasn't ever used but even the ITV photo looks altered in some way.

Yes, because ITV news and the Press Association are in the business of faking photos.

Clutching at straws. The lying statement was made on the bus. The lying statement was made on the press conference poster.

Is this one photoshopped?

Perhaps this one has been manipulated?

Have malign forces attempted to discredit Leavers by adjusting this image?

The text is probably front- or back-projected onto a giant screen behind the speakers, which would explain why the lighting looks unnatural. If we are to believe all four of the reputable news sources mentioned are faking the picture then we are into serious tinfoil hat territory.

The text was on a printed poster. It was displayed at a "Vote Leave" event in Bristol on May 14th 2016, where Boris Johnson and Liam Fox addressed the press and an invited audience.

There's a video in one Daily Telegraph online article that also shows the printed poster. Perhaps that was manipulated too...

It's incredible you even have to make these posts to rebut conspiracy theories!

It's exactly the same with the no-deal stuff now - many of the people behind vote leave are trying to convince people that no-deal is exactly what we voted for, and they never suggested that staying members of the single market would be a good idea. Even though there is tons of evidence with Farage / Johnson / Gove all saying our single market membership is not at risk, or that a Norway style membership would be a good option, plenty of people are now believing they never said anything like that and it's only the remoaners trying to take Brexit away that are suggesting they did. It's almost cult like behaviour!
