Colas to use 86701 for a trial

Colas are taking 86701 for use as a trial. As a part of the agreement 86701 will be out-shopped into Colas' livery at Washwood Heath. Details on the trial will be published by Colas in due course.

The repaint shouldn't take too long, as Colas moved 86701 up to Washwood Heath yesterday.

Same hear! Although sadly, by the way we've been going over the past few years, there can't be many 86s / 87s left in storage now? A point proven further with the export of the two 87s last week.

87s? All gone, 25 and 9 will be joining 17 and 23 shortly. There's some 86s left, but some are spoken for. The horse bolted a long time ago.

Does the reduction in the potential electric fleet and increasing electrification mean there will be a case for new electric freight locos, or are there enough 92s in storage or 90s coming free as IEP enters service?

I don't think IEP will free up any 90s... The only ones in regular passenger service are on Greater Anglia and (EWS-owned) on the ScotRail sleepers, neither of which are due to be replaced by IEP.

I suppose, long-term, the DfT may eventually take up the option to replace the 91s with IEPs, cascading them to the GEML and freeing up the 90s, but that's not likely to take place for quite a while yet.

There are still a number of 90s in storage I believe.

According to a friend at Colas, the 86 is being used with a rake of ex-motorail wagons currently being refurbed. The intention is to run a trial service from Daventry into Euston itself conveying Tesco groceries. Presumably contained in roll cages.

Unusual to say the least...

I've been thinking of using rollcages on wagons for a while, but where actually in Euston station will they go once they're in there, is there a tesco at Euston, or would they be cross loaded, via Platform 1 for example, into 7.5 tonne tail lift vehicles for transport to stores?

Although I was thinking of using specialised containers on container stock with ramps to get on/off platforms with some refrigerated where necessary...

There is plenty of road access to platforms at Euston where the roadways down from the old parcels depot etc I think there are two routes down from above the station.

I could think of worse ideas than loading them onto trucks for final delivery- reduces the mileage the trucks need to run. Could even conceivably use electric delivery vehicles.

Would'nt that parcels depot make a wonderful distribution centre for high value, just in time goods? That's assuming it's still available of course.

Well, it's going. Wait till you see the Colas 86. Although at Ilford, I believe 86702 may also get the Colas livery.

As far as im aware, probably not. All that happend to them when they were in & left Eastleigh is that they had the First Great Western name painted over.
